Passover begins on Wednesday evening. During the Seder, we recite the 10 Plagues visited upon the Egyptians until Pharaoh agreed to free the Israelites from slavery. This illustration updates the Biblical story to include an 11th Plague that the American people have visited upon themselves. There are a lot of parallels. Pharoah was the Sun God. The name “corona” comes from the ring around the sun because that is what the virus looks like. They were both tyrannical leaders who thought they could play G-d. I tried to make that connection in the painting by having him hold a staff, but had a hard time with the head dressing and costume, so I left that out. I put him next to the Hudson River. You know what happened in the Haggadah when the Egyptians tried to follow the Israelites and the sea parted for them.
